TransLink hosts industry forum to jump start partnerships in New Mobility

VANCOUVER, BC — Over 1 million more people expected to arrive in Metro Vancouver over the next 30 years, so getting around this region could become a lot more difficult. But with new transportation technologies and shared-use mobility options arriving all the time, our future selves may find it even more convenient and more comfortable than it is today.

But this better transportation future is only possible if we are proactive and begin working together to create mobility solutions for Metro Vancouver that harness the power of technology rather than react to it.

Today, TransLink is starting that conversation by hosting an industry forum of over 100 transportation professionals working in what many people are calling “New Mobility” – the convergence of related transportation trends towards greater integration, personalization, automation, connectivity, electrification, and sharing.

We know that this region is hungry for alternatives to driving alone in a private car:

  • More than 1 in 5 commute trips are made by transit and the majority of Metro Vancouver residents take transit at least occasionally.
  • Many residents are regular users of our many taxi services and other for-hire vehicles.
  • Our region has four successful car-sharing services that, combined, means we have North America’s second largest fleet of car-sharing vehicles (only after New York).

We are launching several new collaboration tools to make it easier for industry, entrepreneurs and academics to partner more directly with TransLink to co-develop, co-fund and test-bed innovative solutions for a better transportation future.

Today is only the start. We hope ideas drafted here can one day inform and inspire new programs and projects that use technology to improve the way we travel. TransLink is ready to work with new partners to keep the region moving as it grows.

“We know that Metro Vancouverites are on board to try new approaches and most people in this region are hungry for better alternatives to driving alone in their own private car. By working more closely with our partners in New Mobility – we can help create the conditions for more people in this region to make more of their trips by active and shared-use modes.”

Patrick Nagle, CEO, Modo Co-operative –
